Still delayed update
Oh geez, it has been a week since I thought about updating. Been busy with FIUTS orientation and some bit of conference preparation which will be happening in the first weekend of October. I only have aboout 3 minutes of a 30+minute work looked at. Yikes. Much more to do. But tomorrow is the opening day of FIUTS orientation so I will be helping out. My eye is doing okay so far. I can't play soccer this year (I used to play goalie because that did not involve running around the whole time, but that is probably the worst position for me right now - one ball to my face and I could lose my sight). But I can pretty much do everything else. I want to catch up on everything from my second LA trip in late March to what I did (or didn't do) this summer, but that will have to wait till the weekend. | | Tuesday, September 8th, 2009 | | 12:08 am |
Should I update? I have not written here for like half a year. Do people still read LJ? | | Tuesday, February 24th, 2009 | | 4:17 pm |
Yawn...
I feel tired today. I still have to write that paper on electronic music... Current Mood: blah | | Monday, February 16th, 2009 | | 6:29 pm |
California here I come... part 2
I got e-mail today, inviting me to the Fullerton event as well! I am presenting my paper twice! Once in Pomona, once in Fullerton! Yay!!! (I am so going to be bankrupt after two trips to California in March, but 1. it is good for my career and 2. I need some sunshine... oh never mind that storm, it should be gone by March, right? It shall be my early Spring Break trip and I will write my dissertation during the actual break...) Current Mood: giddyCurrent Music: The O.C. Theme | | Saturday, January 24th, 2009 | | 4:05 pm |
California, here I come,...
I am going to Claremont, California! I will be attending the West Coast Conference of Music Theory and Analysis! At Pomona College, no less! It sounds like the conference is intense - from Friday morning non stop to Sunday afternoon - but maybe I can stay till Monday? I miss Claremont, so I am looking forward to this! (Oh yeah, I kinda have to write a paper and prepare a presentation, too...) PS The conference organizer may forward my paper proposal for another event in Fullerton, later that month. So I may be in So-Cal twice! Current Mood: excitedCurrent Music: The OC Theme | | Thursday, January 8th, 2009 | | 10:34 pm |
New Year Update
Oh boy, time flies faster as you get older. I skipped writing on LJ for the whole month of December! I have been busy - I only had one final (Estonian 101), but I also typed up a conference proposal (which, sadly, I have yet to hear back about). The conference is in Pomona so I so would love to go, but it being a dedicated music theory conference, my Hannah Montana paper (which is an interdisciplinary music/politics/cultural studies paper) wasn't quite right for it. So I applied with my Alvin Lucier electronic music paper (yes, I do write on academic music, just once in a blue moon). Then I flew to Japan. I was there for a little over two weeks, and it was a whirlwind. The day after I returned I had time to adjust, then the following day I went to the eye-doctor for a check up. The day after that I went to the bank, then to Kobe, then in a few days I went to Kishiwada, then to Tokyo to visit my uncle (and stay at my grandparents' old house for probably the last time - now that grandfather has passed away, they are selling the empty house, which makes me sad because so much of my childhood - and even recent - vacation memories are of that house). Upon returning to Osaka, I had to help my parents get the house ready for a visit by my brother, his wife and his three tiny kids, all the while packing for my own trip back. The day before new year's eve they came, and while the kids are cute, they are quite a handful. On new year's day, my whole family visited my grandmother on my father's side (the only grandparent I have left, age 94), and from there I went straight to Osaka Kansai International Airport. Flew back on United, via San Francisco, and arrived on the evening of that same day (a very loooong day, due to the time difference). On Jan 2 I helped FIUTS with international student orientation, slept most of the weekend, and have been busy with my work (GPSS) and school (mostly Estonian, with a bit of music reading here and there - gee, will I ever finish?). On Tuesday I spent the entire evening for my friend's birthday. That about wraps up my month and a half. How is everyone else? Current Mood: busy | | Tuesday, November 4th, 2008 | | 5:41 pm |
I cannot vote
But Americans can, in an election that will affect the world. My country will be more affected by this election than any election I can vote on. So please, go out and vote (and if you are in California, vote no on prop 8, vote no on discrimination!). | | Friday, October 31st, 2008 | | 5:00 pm |

Busy
Sorry if I am not commenting much. FIUTS orientation started on Thursday, and GPSS orientation has been going on all this week. Next week ASUW (undergrad student government) will start its orientation, and I will somehow squeeze that in, as well (I am the liaison). When do I work on my Hannah Montana paper? Scarily, I saw the program, with my name on it, and also I am the final presenter. Crikey. Tomorrow FIUTS goes to camp, and I will be back Sunday afternoon. | | Sunday, September 7th, 2008 | | 11:41 pm |
Carless in Seattle
At a very unfortunate time. I was in Bellevue, hanging out with friends ruskaya_rusalka and musiclover04. On my way the battery lamp came on on my dashboard. So I had musiclover04's father, who is a mechanic, take a look at it. My alternator was dead. My car was not generating any electricity. This was after dark, so it was dangerous to get back to Seattle from Bellevue, considering that the headlights will quickly drain out the battery and kill the car. So I had to ask musiclover04 to drive me back. Her father will fix my car in a few days. What is sad is I was supposed to pick up a friend from FIUTS tomorrow at Sea-Tac airport. I hope she got my message before she left... | | Thursday, September 4th, 2008 | | 6:51 pm |
Been a while
I have not written in a while. I have been back in Seattle for about a week now. I thought I finally got over the jetlag yesterday but I fell asleep today at 5pm and woke up confused at 6pm... Still need to look for Hannah Montana songbooks to make my conference paper preparation easier. Happy birthday, xinamarie! | | Wednesday, August 6th, 2008 | | 7:47 am |
My grandfather sleeps peacefully, eternally.
Sakae Mishima July 6, 1910 - August 4, 2008. He died peacefully in his sleep, from old age. He can finally see Grandma again. I just got back to Osaka tonight, will head back out to Tokyo this weekend for the funeral. | | Saturday, August 2nd, 2008 | | 5:20 am |
To Tokyo
I leave tomorrow. I probably won't have internet access for the next week or so. | | Thursday, July 31st, 2008 | | 7:54 am |
The state of me: high alert
No, I have not joined the military. Nor am I working on my dissertation (like I should be). But I am on alert. I am back in Osaka, Japan, enjoying the lazy and relaxing vacation - to some extent. It is very hot and humid here (one of the reasons I have not updated LJ lately - it is so hot, especially on the second floor where the internet connection is). But there is also another reason. To put it bluntly, my grandfather seems to be dying. Now, he has had a long life already - he turned 98 this month. And at his age, anything can happen any day. But we noticed that he has been speaking less and less until recently he hardly speaks, and now supposedly he is hardly eating. Realistically, he seems to be coming to the end of his life. My mother (it's her father) went to Tokyo today. And I gathered my dark suit and started packing my bags today as well. I am not sad (yet), not even worried - it's not like he is ill, he is just naturally fading. It's hard to even grasp how I feel. Just not very relaxed despite not doing much. The clock just past midnight, it is August here. Sometime this month I will most likely go to Tokyo. Current Mood: indescribable | | Saturday, June 14th, 2008 | | 2:02 pm |
Alice Upside Down
If you want to see a good family movie, go see Alice Upside Down. Alyson Stoner is an amazing actress despite her age. | | Wednesday, June 11th, 2008 | | 1:31 pm |
Another one of those
From gnawtee (she asked the questions, too). Here are the rules: 1. Leave me a comment saying, "Interview me." 2. I will respond by asking you 5 questions of a very personal nature. 3. You will update your LJ with the answers to the questions. 4. You will include this and an offer to interview someone else in the post. 5. When others comment asking to be interviewed, you will ask them 5 questions. 1. So what do you want to BE when you grow up? That involves growing up, which I am not sure if I ever will. :) It looks like I am on a track to becoming a music professor, though. 2. If you had to choose between never going back to Japan or never going back to the US, where would you stay? Oh boy. That would be difficult. Maybe never going back to the US, just because all my American friends are mobile, while my grandfather and my grandmother aren't. Besides, Vancouver, Canada is close enough to the States... yeah, that's where I would like to live in if I am ever barred from America. 3. You can only listen to one artist the rest of your life. Who do you choose? Another tough one! Probably Tori Amos. 4. Is there anything you would change about yourself? I would like to be less lazy, and procrastinate less. I mean, I kind of enjoy all that but it is getting to a point where I do need to finish my degree. Also, I wish I had a rock-solid perfect pitch. 5. Do you and your parents ever argue? All the time! They start lecturing me about how bad Coke is for my health, and I start mentioning that while alcohol causes more deaths per year (including DUI in the stats) than any soft drink ever did, etc. We argue a lot about race, my plans (or the lack of), etc. | | Thursday, May 22nd, 2008 | | 3:27 pm |
It exists! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rnj80Ha7f2kEverybody wants to RUN the world. It's a simple remix. They added some cheesy synthesized brass, changed the lyric from rule to run, and had some commentary for the charity cause. Bob Geldof is in the video. | | Friday, May 16th, 2008 | | 10:07 pm |
An 80's music question
Has anyone seen a recording of or heard the song "Everybody wants to RUN the world" (not "Everybody wants to rule the world," a song everybody knows) by Tears for Fears??? Supposedly it was a charity record that was a top 10 hit in UK in the 80s. I have never seen the real thing. It does exist, though, right? | | Friday, April 11th, 2008 | | 3:53 pm |
Facebook is down!
I cannot get access to facebook today! (and it is a sad realization that my social life is dependent on facebook...) | | Sunday, April 6th, 2008 | | 10:09 pm |
The Singing Revolution
The first week of school was so busy. Yesterday I helped my friend shop. Today I slept in, dawdled in the afternoon, and went to see a movie spontaneously. It was an amazing movie. So powerful, it made me cry (I hate it when that happens in a public theatre - I was glad that I watched "Life is Beautiful" on video for that reason - but this movie deserved it). A true story of a non-violent revolution made possible through music. Out in selected theatres. Go see this movie if you get a chance.
